The main man of Sri Lankan pace battery, Lasith Malinga is all set to consider his future in International cricket after the series against India, saying he will hang his boots if his performance drops.
“I”m playing after 19 months following a leg injury. In the Zimbabwe and India series, I couldn”t play well. I”ll see where I”m at after this series, and evaluate how long I can play given the way my body is,” Malinga said in an interview.
Malinga took his 300th wicket in the fourth ODI of the series when he dismissed Virat Kohli after a well-made knock of 131 runs in just 96 balls.
The veteran pacer further added, “No matter how experienced I am – if I can”t win a match for the team and do what the team needs, there”s no point in me being here. I”ll see if I can make up for that 19 months and regain that form over the next 3 or four months.”
India thrashed Sri Lanka by 168 runs in the penultimate match of the ODI series which is also the heaviest loss at home. While assessing the defeat, the stand-in captain of the team cited inexperience as one of the main reason for Sri Lanka’s poor show throughout the series. He also mentioned that the younger players will need time to bring back the glory days. He further admitted that this bunch of players should be retained till the 2019 World Cup to get fruitful results.
“I”ll see the number of games that I get. If not I”ll have to consider the state of my body, and what is expected of me. If I can”t deliver that, then I”ll happily retire,” Malinga signed off.
