“Let Him Have Some Time” – Indian Icon On Jasprit Bumrah As Future Test Captain

Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev believes Jasprit Bumrah needs time to establish himself as a leader in Test cricket. Bumrah captained India in two of the five Tests during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia.

Under his leadership, India triumphed in the first Test in Perth by 295 runs, with Bumrah filling in for Rohit Sharma, who remained in India for the birth of his second child. The fast bowler led by example, taking eight wickets as India went 1-0 up in the series. Bumrah also captained India in the final Test in Sydney after Rohit sat out due to a slump in form.

At an event organized by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) in Delhi, where he serves as president, Kapil addressed several important questions about Indian cricket. When asked if Bumrah should be given a longer stint as captain, he responded (as quoted by news agency PTI):

“If he has been given the opportunity (to captain India in Tests), then give him some time also.”

The former India captain also expressed confidence in Rohit and Virat Kohli making the right decisions regarding their retirement. There have been doubts about the future of the veteran cricketers after their struggles in the Test series in Australia. When asked if they should be included in the Test series in England, Kapil responded:

“They are very big players. Let’s hope when they think it’s the right time to play, when they think it’s not, they will call it off.”

The 66-year-old Indian cricket legend also declined to criticize the selectors for not including in-form players Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in the five-match T20I series at home against England. He remarked:

“How can I comment on the judgment of others? I think the selectors would have thought about it. So, if I say something it would be criticizing them. I don’t want to criticize them. They (selectors) are a group of people who must have planned and thought about that.”
