It has been 10 days since India’s historic win Down Under at the Gabba, former Australia cricketer Michael Hussey is still in awe of India’s young batting prodigy Shubman Gill. The young batsman from Punjab made his debut in the Boxing Day Test and has already floored everyone with his calm and composure.

Meanwhile, Gill made it to the playing XI at the expense of Prithvi Shaw, who failed to score runs in Adelaide. Coming into the team Shubmn Gill grabbed the opportunity with both hands playing a whirlwind knock of 45 runs in Melbourne against the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.

Shubman Gill is the real future of Indian cricket – Michael Hussey

He looked at ease playing his shots and natural game. Shubman Gill’s confidence continued to grow and he returned as the second-highest run-getter among the Indians. His 91-run knock in the second innings at Gabba set the stage as Rishabh Pant pulled one of the greatest heists of all time.

Impressed with his antics with the bat, Michael Hussey showered heaps of praise on Shubman Gill calling him the real future of Indian cricket along with Rishabh Pant, who resurrected his career with a couple of defining knocks. Hussey also spoke highly of Cheteshwar Pujara, who was at the fulcrum of India’s batting.

“You have got to give credit to (Cheteshwar) Pujara, he showed a lot of courage in Brisbane. It was an important innings. He was wearing the Australian bowlers down. The other guys, Shubman Gill and Pant played around him. They were able to be more aggressive against the tiring attack,” Michael Hussey said to Khaleej Times.

“There were some wonderful performances from India. I think Gill’s innings was superb. He looks like a real player for the future for India. I love the way he goes about it. And of course, Pant played one of the most incredible innings I have seen,” he added.

Meanwhile, Michael Hussey was among the few who didn’t write off India despite their Adelaide drubbing and after losing Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami. The former Aussie cricketer admitted that he was left mighty impressed with what he saw transpire in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

“I was certainly not writing India off at the stage, but I thought it was going to be difficult to come back from that, plus their captain (Virat Kohli) was going home. And of course, Mohammad Shami was injured as well. I thought that was going to be a massive loss, but I was really buoyed by Ajinkya Rahane’s comment at the toss at the MCG Test.

“He had a very positive attitude. He kept the guys nice and positive. He gave new players the opportunity and I think he got them to focus on the positive things. I think that really worked,” Michael Hussey signed off.
