Australia finally managed to secure a breakthrough thanks to a brilliant driving throw from Marnus Labuschagne which caught Ajinkya Rahane an inch short of his crease in the morning session of day three at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Meanwhile, India have secured a 100+ first-innings lead to take the driver’s seat in the ongoing Boxing Day Test.
Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane – both the overnight batters looked in complete control of the things in the morning session of day three. Australian bowlers were quite predictable with their line and length as Indian batters rotated the strike quite convincingly to keep the scoreboard moving before an error of judgement cost Rahane his wicket.
Ajinkya Rahane falls short by an inch
Jadeja was clearly looking for a single to get to his fifty-run landmark in the previous deliveries. However, he wasn’t getting them and the ever-generous Ajinkya Rahane decides to aid his partner with a risky run. The southpaw dabbed to point and they set off for the single but Manus Labuschagne’s throw at the striker’s end is flat with Tim Paine doing the rest.

Although it didn’t look that close in real-time, to be honest, but as it turns out, Rahane was short by the thinnest of margins. Meanwhile, it has to be a run-out given the way he was batting in this innings. Ajinkya Rahane gives a pat to Jadeja, as if to relieve his partner of any possible guilt and then walks off to a standing ovation from the MCG crowd.

Meanwhile, India ended day 2 on a high thanks to a brilliant century from stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane. The veteran, who was under some pressure, looked confident and played an innings of the highest order to put his side on top coming from the back of an eight-wicket thumping loss. The visitors will look to keep up the good job as they look to bounce back in the series.
