Matheesha Pathirana Ruled Out Of The ODI Series Against India, Mohamed Shiraz Named Replacement

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has summoned Mohamed Shiraz to fill in for Matheesha Pathirana, who would not participate due to injury. The three-match series against India is slated to start on August 2, 2023 in Colombo where all the three ODIs would be held at R. Premadasa Stadium.

Pathirana was injured in his shoulder during the last T20I match that took place at Pallekele on October 2023. Sri Lanka’s most lethal bowlers were playing as he attempted to field the ball from deep backward point when he had to leave the field his shoulder hitting.

At that point of time, in the seventh over of the innings, the right-arm fast bowler had not yet bowled any over and also did not bowl an over afterwards during this innings. Therefore, he will be missed for all three matches.

Even though Shiraz hasn’t played an international match yet but he has so far had a remarkable career in List A cricket with outstanding numbers. With that being said, the 29-year-old paceman has taken 80 wickets out of 47 games at an average of 17.52 each.

Sri Lanka aims to recover after a series sweep in the T20Is

In other news, the Island nation experienced an embarrassing defeat of 3-0 in the T20I leg of the white-ball series. Suryakumar Yadav’s India triumphed in all three matches even though hosts had good chances during the three matches. At the beginning itself, home team collapsed at 9/30, while at the second match, they lost 7/31.

Nevertheless, the third T20I saw the worst display of play, where at one moment they were 110-1, while chasing 138 with Charith Asalanka and his company. India succeeded in forcing for a super over when six runs were required off the final ball. During this Super Over too, Sri Lanka failed as it lost two wickets for just two runs.

Suryakumar Yadav secured a breathtaking win with the initial boundary of the Super Over. This was also their tenth successive defeat to India all formats taken together. The selectors have also replaced Kusal Mendis with Asalanka as their captain for the limited-overs format.
