Matthew Mott Resigns As England’s White-Ball Coach; Marcus Trescothick Steps In Temporarily

As of Tuesday, July 30, Matthew Mott has resigned as England men’s cricket team white-ball coach effective immediately. Mott made this decision after England failed to retain their T20 World Cup title last month.

Mott got appointed in May, 2022. It was an instant success as he helped England to win T20 World Cup later that year against Australia. Nonetheless, next two seasons were not remarkable since their national team had to defend their titles of 50-over and T20 World Cups but were unable to do so.

According to Robert Key, the managing director for cricket of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it was not an easy decision; however, they believed it was necessary for them to give their men’s team a new look in order to prepare them for more challenges in the future. Key made this comment with reference to the upcoming champions trophy, which is the closest ICC event.

As quoted by ecb.co.uk, he stated: “On behalf of everyone connected to England cricket and me personally, I would like to thank Mathew for all he has done for the team since his appointment. He can be proud of his achievements as he leaves his post as one of only three coaches who have won a Men’s World Cup with England.”

“Yes, I have put my hand in the fire, after being at three world cup cycles in a row (and even more in quick succession), that it’s now time for the team to change course so as to squarely face what lies ahead.”

“This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team’s future success. With our focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competition, it is crucial that we ensure the team is focused and prepared.”

Currently, Marcus Trescothick is a batting coach, but he will take charge temporarily for the ODI and T20 teams. The board maintained that it would soon look out for a permanent replacement.

“We have invested all our efforts into achieving success over the past two years”- Matthew Mott

Mott has said that the T20 World Cup win marks his coaching career, and he is grateful to all for their encouragement. He further stated:

“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022.”

“I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories.”

In September, England will have their following white-ball task which will be a home series against Australia comprised of five ODIs and three T20Is.
