MCA’s Unique Tribute To Groundsmen On Wankhede’s 50th Anniversary

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium in a special way by honoring its unsung heroes—the groundsmen. According to The Indian Express, 178 active groundsmen were felicitated with a thoughtfully curated Jumbo household hamper as a token of gratitude for their tireless contributions.

Ajinkya Naik, MCA president, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “We could have given them money, but we wanted to make their day memorable with something different.” He highlighted the vital yet often unnoticed role of groundsmen, describing them as the “heartbeat of each ground and stadium.”

The Jumbo Household Hamper

The Jumbo hamper included a wide range of daily essentials and thoughtful items designed to support the recipients and their families. Each hamper featured five kilograms each of wheat, rice, and dal, a mixer grinder, medical and hydration kits, a backpack, a mini kit bag, and a waist pouch. Personal items like T-shirts, track pants, jackets, socks, shoes, flip-flops, caps, and hats were also included, alongside toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, hair oil, and combs.

Additionally, the hamper contained a tea kettle with tea bags, a bedsheet with a pillow, towels, a blanket, utensils, sunscreen, a raincoat, an umbrella, and sipper bottles. Naik explained that these basic necessities were chosen to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the groundsmen and their families.

Honoring Mumbai’s 1974 Ranji Trophy Team

The celebration also extended to Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy-winning team of 1974, then representing Bombay. Eight members of the victorious team, including legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Karsan Ghavri, and Padmakar Shivalkar, were recognized during the event.

Five of the eight players—Shivalkar, Ghavri, Ajit Pai, Milind Rege, and Abdul Ismail—attended the ceremony, adding a nostalgic touch to the celebrations. The MCA’s dual efforts to honor both past cricketing heroes and current groundsmen highlighted the association’s commitment to recognizing all those who contribute to the sport’s legacy.

By spotlighting the essential yet often overlooked role of groundsmen and paying homage to cricketing legends, the MCA set a commendable example of inclusivity and gratitude, marking Wankhede Stadium’s golden milestone with dignity and respect.
