MI Debutant Ashwani Kumar Shatters Manish Pandey's Stump in Thrilling MI vs KKR Clash

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 witnessed a spectacular performance at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as Mumbai Indians’ debutant pacer Ashwani Kumar delivered a spellbinding performance against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 31st. The young left-arm pacer left a lasting impact with a four-wicket haul in his very first IPL game, making history along the way.

Who is Ashwani Kumar?

Ashwani Kumar, a 23-year-old left-arm pacer, has been making waves in domestic cricket. Hailing from a town called Jhanjeri, near Chandigarh, Ashwani has previously represented Punjab in first-class, List A, and T20 cricket. His raw pace, ability to swing the ball, and accurate yorkers earned him a spot in the Mumbai Indians squad for IPL 2025.

Ashwani Kumar’s Impactful Spell

Coming into the attack in the fourth over, Ashwani Kumar wasted no time making an impression. On his very first ball, he dismissed KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, setting the tone for an extraordinary debut. His next victim was Rinku Singh, who fell prey to his sharp bowling. The real showstoppers, however, were his dismissals of Manish Pandey and Andre Russell.

Manish Pandey’s Wicket

On the last ball of the 11th over, Ashwani Kumar bowled a scrambled seam back-of-a-length delivery targeting the leg stump. Pandey, attempting to defend, left a bat-pad gap, allowing the ball to crash into the top of the leg stump. The dismissal left Pandey stunned and the crowd roaring.

Andre Russell’s Wicket

In his next over, Ashwani Kumar bowled a length ball that kicked off the pitch, taking the top of off-stump as Russell attempted a wild swing. The ball shattered the stumps, leaving KKR in tatters.

Ashwani Kumar’s Historic Feat

With his dream spell of 4/24 in just three overs, Ashwani Kumar became the first Indian pacer to take four wickets on IPL debut. He joined an elite list featuring Alzarri Joseph (6/12), Andrew Tye (5/17), and Shoaib Akhtar (4/11), who had achieved similar feats in their first IPL appearances.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ Collapse

KKR struggled to counter Mumbai Indians’ lethal bowling attack, getting bundled out for a mere 116 runs in just 16.2 overs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi (26) and Ramandeep Singh (22) were the only notable contributors, but the lack of partnerships proved disastrous.

Mumbai Indians’ Bowling Performance

Aside from Ashwani Kumar’s standout performance, Mumbai Indians’ bowlers delivered a remarkable collective effort to stifle KKR’s innings. Deepak Chahar impressed with figures of 2/19, while Trent Boult (1/23), Hardik Pandya (1/10), Vignesh Puthur (1/21), and Mitchell Santner (1/17) all contributed significantly. Their disciplined bowling ensured that KKR struggled to build any momentum throughout the match.
