Mike Hesson Says Wasim Junior Best Death Bowler

Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson recently hailed Mohammad Wasim Jr as “probably the best death bowler in Pakistan,” applauding his sharp yorkers, reverse swing, and composure under pressure. Hesson’s remarks instantly caught attention among fans and analysts, who viewed them as strong validation of Wasim’s talent and potential.

However, the irony became evident soon after — despite being publicly labeled as the country’s top death-over specialist, Wasim Jr was left out of Pakistan’s playing XI for three consecutive tournaments.

Hesson’s statement, which was meant as a compliment, instead ignited debate over the national team’s selection policies. “He’s one of the few bowlers who can execute yorkers consistently,” Hesson had said, highlighting the very skills Pakistan often lacks in crunch overs. Yet, Wasim’s absence from the field told a different story.

Benched Across Three Major Series

Following Hesson’s glowing praise, Wasim Jr was not picked in three back-to-back events — the T20I Tri-Nation Series featuring Afghanistan and the UAE, the Asia Cup 2025, and the T20I series against South Africa. The 22-year-old’s omission surprised many, given his record and experience in the shortest format.

His last T20I appearance for Pakistan came in January 2024 against New Zealand in Christchurch, while his most recent outing in any format was in April 2025 during Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand.

Wasim’s statistics further fuel the debate: 2 Tests, 22 ODIs, and 29 T20Is for Pakistan, along with 117 wickets in 99 T20s at an average of 26.00 and an economy rate of 8.71. Despite such numbers, the young pacer continues to warm the bench — a move many fans deem contradictory to Hesson’s words.

Criticism Over Inconsistent Selection Policies

The contradiction between Hesson’s comments and the actual selections has sparked criticism on social media. Fans question why a player publicly acknowledged as a match-winning death bowler isn’t being utilized in crucial games. Analysts suggest that internal selection dynamics, team balance, or fitness concerns might have influenced the decision, but without transparency, it only deepens the confusion.

The episode underscores Pakistan cricket’s recurring issue of inconsistent selection. While Hesson’s praise was meant to boost confidence, it has inadvertently highlighted communication gaps within the management. For Wasim Jr, being called the “best death bowler” but still missing game time could become both a compliment and a curse — recognition without opportunity.
