Milton Shumba Misses India T20I Series Due To Hamstring Injury

Zimbabwe batter Milton Shumba has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against India after suffering a right hamstring injury, with Innocent Kaia named as his replacement. The setback comes just ahead of the series opener at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday, July 23, dealing a blow to Sikandar Raza’s side.

Shumba’s injury adds to Zimbabwe’s growing fitness concerns, prompting multiple changes to the squad. Uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Tafadzwa Tsiga has received his maiden call-up, while Wessly Madhevere and fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri return after recovering from injuries that kept them out of the recent T20I series against Bangladesh.

Why Innocent Kaia’s Return Is a Big Boost for Zimbabwe?

Innocent Kaia, who made his T20I debut against Scotland on September 17, 2021, returns to the Zimbabwe squad with valuable experience in the shortest format. The 33-year-old right-handed batter has been recalled to fill the void left by Milton Shumba’s injury and add stability to the batting unit ahead of the series against the world champions.

Zimbabwe head into the series looking to bounce back after a 2-1 T20I series defeat to Bangladesh. Despite the disappointment, the hosts have strengthened their squad with the returns of experienced players Wessly Madhevere and Newman Nyamhuri as they aim to put up a strong challenge against India.

Can India Carry Their Winning Momentum Forward?

India head into the series after a disappointing 4-0 T20I series defeat to England earlier this month. It was the first time the Men in Blue had lost all four matches in a bilateral T20I series, extending their winless run in the format to seven games.

The result also left new captain Shreyas Iyer with an unwanted record. However, despite their recent struggles, the reigning T20 World Cup champions will still start as overwhelming favourites in Harare. The three-match series begins on Thursday at the Harare Sports Club.

Zimbabwe will be hoping Innocent Kaia and their returning players can inspire an upset, although Milton Shumba’s injury has weakened their batting resources ahead of a series that concludes on Sunday, July 26.

Updated Zimbabwe squad: Sikandar Raza (C), Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl, Tanaka Chivanga, Ben Curran, Brad Evans, Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri, Innocent Kaia, Tafadzwa Tsiga.
