Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has shed light on his decision to withdraw from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, co-hosted by Pakistan and the UAE. Originally included in Australia’s preliminary squad, Starc was absent from the final 15-player roster. Cricket Australia had initially cited personal reasons for his withdrawal, a decision fully supported by the team.
Speaking on the Willow Talk podcast, Starc clarified that his primary motivation for skipping the tournament was to prepare for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa in June. The left-arm pacer revealed that he had been deali with ankle pain during the recent Test series and wanted to ensure he was in peak condition for upcoming challenges.
Managing Fitness and a Packed Schedule
Starc emphasized the importance of maintaining his fitness, especially with a hectic cricketing calendar ahead. Besides the WTC Final, Australia has a tour of the West Indies and potential commitments in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His decision to step away from the Champions Trophy allows him to focus on recovery and gradually ease back into competitive cricket. Starc expressed his desire to be fully fit for the Test final, stating, “Get my body right, play some cricket in the next couple of months, and then be ready to go for the Test final.” His absence, however, has not significantly impacted Australia’s campaign so far, with pacers Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, and Nathan Ellis stepping up to deliver strong performances.
Australia’s Champions Trophy Campaign and Starc’s WTC Aspirations
Despite a strong start to their Champions Trophy campaign with a victory over England, Australia faced a setback due to a washout against South Africa. They now need a crucial win against Afghanistan to secure a spot in the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, Starc remains focused on the bigger picture—helping Australia secure a second consecutive WTC title.
Reflecting on the significance of the championship, he admitted that while he was initially indifferent when the tournament was introduced, watching Australia narrowly miss out in the past changed his perspective. Now, as the team eyes back-to-back WTC triumphs, Starc is determined to be at his best, forming a formidable bowling attack alongside Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
