Mohammed Shami Optimistic About Return To International Cricket

Team India pacer Mohammed Shami remains hopeful about making a return to the international stage soon. After missing action since the 2023 World Cup final against Australia due to an ankle injury, Shami was seen bowling at near full pace for 45 minutes at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. This session took place after India’s Test match against New Zealand in Bengaluru on October 20, where he bowled to assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. However, his full-match fitness is yet to be assessed.

Patience is Key to Recovery

Speaking at an event by Eugenix Hair Sciences in Gurugram, Shami emphasized the importance of patience during recovery. Reflecting on his recent practice session, he shared that it felt great to bowl at full capacity again, especially after months of working with a limited run-up to avoid further strain.

As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Shami said, “It felt great… Yesterday, we decided that I would bowl properly, and I gave my 100%. It felt great, [and] the results are good. Hopefully, I’ll be back on track soon. It’s very difficult to come back on track after an injury, so patience is the biggest thing.”

Shami further explained that injuries teach valuable lessons in patience, which helps refine one’s skills. His determination to regain full fitness suggests he is ready to take the necessary steps to return stronger.

Fitness Focus for Australia Series

While Shami’s availability for the upcoming five-Test series against Australia remains uncertain, he remains focused on his fitness. A key bowler for India, Shami has played 64 Tests and taken 229 wickets at an average of 27.71.

He acknowledged the importance of being physically prepared before the Australia tour and expressed a desire to play a few domestic matches to sharpen his skills. Shami remarked, “The Australia series is still far away… If I get fit and I get a gap of eight to ten days, then it’s better I play one or two domestic matches before going to Australia.”

India’s Test series against Australia is set to begin on November 22 in Perth, and Shami aims to be in peak condition before joining the team for the challenging tour.
