Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been left out of the Bengal side for the opening game of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While Shami is included in the country’s playing squad for the domestic fifty-over tournament, he will not be able to feature in the first game due to top-heavy concerns.
It will be unwise to blame the management for this decision since Shami is also a key player for the Indian team, meaning his workload needs to be well managed to avoid future injuries. Shami is currently featured for India in international cricket and has been performing creditably in his games.
Bengal will play their first match against Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Such a case might apply to Mohammed Shami, who is out of the team; there are sure to be other talented players to fill the vacuum left behind. As for when Shami will return to cricket for Bengal in the tournament, it is yet to be determined.
Mohammed Shami is set to miss Bengal’s Vijay Hazare opener
Mohammed Shami, one of India’s senior-most pacers, is likely to be benched for Bengal’s Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Delhi on Saturday. Newspaper source PTI reported yesterday that the Bengal Cricket Association stated that the seamer will sit out for the match to be held in Hyderabad.
This decision comes at a time with rising knee swellings after which the rider resumed from the injury list. Having recently come back from surgery, this year Shami achieved outstanding results during the domestic season, taking seven wickets in the Ranji Trophy and nine in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. But knee injuries did not vanish as fast, and fearing future tournaments, selectors decided to be cautious.
“India and Bengal veteran pacer Mohammad Shami will be rested for the Vijay Hazare Trophy opening match,” a statement from CAB read on social media.
