Mohammed Siraj Appointed As DSP In Telangana

The Telangana state government has appointed cricketer Mohammed Siraj as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in recognition of his contributions to Indian cricket, as reported by The Hindu. This prestigious position falls under the Indian Police Service (IPS) and is the second rank in the IPS hierarchy.

Officers in this role are responsible for maintaining law and order, investigating crimes, and ensuring peace in their designated districts. A photograph shared online shows Siraj with police officers, holding an acknowledgment letter and a bouquet, symbolizing the honor bestowed upon him.

Siraj’s Celebrated Cricket Career

Upon returning to his home state following India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Siraj was felicitated by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Hailing from Hyderabad, the cricketer has represented India in 29 Tests, 44 ODIs, and 16 T20Is, taking 163 wickets across all formats.

Most recently, Siraj played in India’s 2-0 Test series victory against Bangladesh. His next appearance is anticipated during the upcoming three-match home Test series against New Zealand.

Siraj’s achievement of being appointed as DSP adds him to a growing list of cricketers with government appointments. MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, holds an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar holds an honorary rank in the Indian Air Force. Joginder Sharma, a member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, is now a permanent DSP in Haryana.

Key Role in India’s Future Series

Mohammed Siraj is expected to play a crucial role in India’s 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, where India will seek a historic hat-trick of series wins in Australia. The 30-year-old fast bowler has already made a mark with 13 wickets in three Tests against Australia, including a five-wicket haul.

Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer emphasized the importance of the Indian pace trio’s fitness for the upcoming series. He wrote on X, “If Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj stay fit and are able to play most of the series, India have a great opportunity for a hat-trick down under. Arshdeep could bring the left-arm option. And Mayank Yadav dark horse provided he’s fit and available.”
