The return of MS Dhoni to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season has sparked anticipation. Following the last season where CSK clinched its fifth IPL title, speculation arose about Dhoni’s potential retirement. However, after CSK’s triumph, he expressed his intention to continue playing due to the overwhelming support he received.

Post-IPL 2023, Dhoni underwent knee surgery, and recently, videos of his preparations for the IPL 2024 circulated widely. On Monday, Dhoni shared an intriguing update on his Facebook, stating, “Can’t wait for the new season and the new ‘role’. Stay tuned!” While it remains unclear if the reference is to the IPL 2024 edition, Dhoni’s mention of a ‘new role’ ignited rapid viral speculation.

Fans speculated whether Dhoni might take on a coaching role or perhaps work as a mentor. Comments on his post included inquiries like, “Hope you will be coaching this season,” and “New ‘role’ means? Are you gonna work as Mentor too?” Some even speculated about the possibility of Dhoni’s retirement, with one user suggesting, “I am pretty sure, Chennai Super Kings are going to announce a new captain for the team. And, retirement is near.”

Chennai Super Kings’ pre-season camp began with the presence of pacer Deepak Chahar, eyeing a national comeback through consistent IPL performances. Notably, the camp included players like Simarjeet Singh, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Mukesh Choudhary, Prashant Solanki, Ajay Mandal, and Deepak Chahar.

Chahar, who has been absent from cricket since December, aims for a return, especially eyeing the T20 World Cup in June. Meanwhile, the confirmation of fan-favourite skipper MS Dhoni’s participation is still pending. Spotted with his wife in Jamnagar recently, Dhoni attended a pre-wedding function. CSK is set to kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22.
