Last year’s champion Mumbai Indians will lock horns with the runners-up Chennai Super Kings in the opening clash of the Indian Premier League 2020 on March 29. Meanwhile, the organising committee has done away with the Saturday double-headers, thereby adding another week to the league phase for the 2020 season. As per the schedule released to the franchises and the broadcaster, there will be only six double-headers all on Sundays.

Meanwhile, the league phase of IPL 2020 will end on May 17 – stretching across 50 days this season as compared to 44 last year. Royal Challengers Bangalore will be taking on the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai at home in the Chinnaswamy Stadium in the last league game. The schedule of the knockouts is yet to be announced.

Barring Rajasthan Royals, who have listed out Guwahati as their probable second home venue, the other seven franchises have stuck to their traditional venues for home games. Despite the Lodha committee recommendation of a fortnight’s break between India’s last international game and the IPL curtain-raiser, the cash-rich league will commence only 11 days after India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa in Kolkata on March 18.

BCCI has also introduced concussion substitutes and a third-umpire for no-ball rule. This year promises to be even bigger and the stakes are higher than that of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 to follow in Australia.
