Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets in the El-Clasico of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night. Mumbai successfully chased the target of 98 runs with the help of Tilak Verma’s knock.
While chasing the small target of 98 runs, Mumbai didn’t get a good start in the powerplay. Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Ishan Kishan in the first over of the run chase. A few overs later, Rohit Sharma also followed. Rohit once again failed to create his impact with the bat.
Daniel Sams was promoted to counterattack in the powerplay, but he couldn’t score much. Debutant Triston Stubbs failed to open his account. Mukesh Choudhary picked up 3 wickets in the Powerplay to open a window for CSK. Tilak and Hrithik had a big responsibility on their shoulders to take MI home safely.
The youngster from Hyderabad, who has been impressive in IPL 2022, didn’t disappoint today as well. Tilak Verma played brilliant innings of 34* runs to safely negotiate the danger. In the end, Tim David hit 2 huge sixes to finish the match for Mumbai Indians.
Here are some of the top Twitter reactions:
Much life in this game still .Mukesh Choudhary and Simranjeet have been excellent. But the #MI batting order and approach have been a bit baffling

Dhoni finishes off in style! A magnificent strike into the crowd. Chennai cross 49 after 52 balls. The party starts in the dressing room and it's the Chennai captain who has been absolutely magnificent in the night for the 9th place match.

A day to forget so far for #CSK. One debatable call but that cannot explain away a mere 97. Bumrah and Sams were outstanding today.

Lowest scores of Chennai Super Kings in IPL history:
79 for 10 vs Mumbai
97 for 10 vs Mumbai
109 for 10 vs Mumbai— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) May 12, 2022
Daniel Sams 3 wicket haul restricts CSK to 97 runs
After being invited to bat first, CSK got a terrible start in the powerplay, losing five wickets in the powerplay. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Robin Uthappa and Shivam Dube all were dismissed cheaply. CSK never got the momentum in their innings due to regular wickets falling.
MS Dhoni was the only player from Chennai Super Kings, who fought till the end. He scored 36* runs to take CSK to a total of 98 runs. However, this total was never going to be enough. Daniel Sams picked up three important wickets while Riley Meredith grabbed two crucial wickets.
