New Zealand Women team break their own 21-year old world record in emphatic style

The first women’s ODI match was played as a part of Women’s World Cup 1973 between Young England and Australia on 23rd June as the first match between Jamaica and New Zealand was washed out. The Men’s Cricket first One day international was played between Australia and England at MCG On 5th January 1971.

History was created as New Zealand women posted the highest ever total in all One-day Internationals of 490 for 4 in 50 overs against Ireland at Dublin today. The New Zealand girls surpassed England’s men team total of 444 against Pakistan made on 30th August 2016.

The New Zealand women captain Suzie Bates won the toss and elected to bat first. JM Watkin and Suzie Bates added 172 runs in just 18.5 overs. After that Bates and Green added 116 runs for the 2nd wicket.

JM Watkin scored 62 off 59 balls, Suzie Bates smashed 151 off 94 balls with 24 fours and 2 sixes, ML Green scored 121 off 77 balls with 15 fours and 1 six, AC Kerr made quick fire 81 off 45 with 9 fours and 3 sixes, Bezuidenhout made 23 off 15 balls, Amy Satterthwaite also contributed 21 off 18 balls. It was a dominating display by the New Zealand women’s team who smashed Ireland bowlers to all parts of the ground.

New Zealand women posted 490 for 4 in 50 overs. C Murray became the most expensive bowler in all One-day internationals giving away 119 runs in 10 overs and took 2 wickets. Playing for Australia Mick Lewis was taken for 113 runs against South Africa in men’s ODI match played at Wanders, Johannesburg in 2006.  L Maritz and GH Lewis gave away 92 runs, took 1 wicket each. L Little did not pick any wicket and went for 92 runs also.

A total of 64 fours and also 7 sixes were hit by the New Zealand batters. The New Zealand women in the match by a massive 346 runs as Ireland were bowled out for 144 in 35.3 overs.

Records

Bates surpassed Debbie Hockey to become New Zealand highest run-getter in women’s ODI cricket.

With this record batting performance, New Zealand surpassed their 21-year-old record of scoring 455 for 5 against Pakistan at Christchurch in January 1997.

Apart from New Zealand, Australia women became the first team to score 400 plus runs in women’s cricket against Denmark scoring 412 for 3 in Women’s World Cup 1997 match at Mumbai.  New Zealand posted the score 400 plus mark against Pakistan on 29th January 1997.

In women’s cricket, the score of 400 plus has been touched only 3, two by New Zealand and one by Australia. In the top list of top 5 team totals, Australia posted 397 for 4 against Pakistan on 7th February 1997 and the 5th one by England women of 378 for 5 against Pakistan in 2016.

The England men’s team posted the highest ever total in ODI cricket before today. The England Cricket team scored 444 for 3 in 50 overs at Nottingham, Trent Bridge on 30th August 2016. During that match, Alex Hales scored 171, Jason Roy 15, Joe Root 85, Jos Buttler 90 not out and Eoin Morgan 57. Chasing the target of 445, Pakistan lost by a big margin of 169 runs.

The total of 400 plus run in Men’s Cricket has been created 18 times by several teams.  Out of 18 times, England, Sri Lanka and Australia scoring 400 plus scores twice each, South Africa a record 6 times, India scoring 400 plus totals in ODI cricket 5 times and Australia scoring 400 plus just once.
