Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has opined that the Indian squad needs to undergo changes on the road to the 2024 T20 World Cup. He expressed that some of the players should not be part of the team in the mega-event. Sehwag’s comments have come in the aftermath of India’s semi-final exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup recently.

Team India reached the knockout stages after finishing at the top of Group 2 in Super 12. However, they suffered a disappointing loss against England by 10 wickets at the Adelaide Oval to bow out of the tournament. The loss has raised several questions about India’s approach in T20Is. Former cricketer Virender Sehwag feels India doesn’t need to change the thinking process. However, he added that there should be some changes in the team.

“Look, I don’t want changes in the thinking process or anything else but I do wish for changes in the team. In the next World Cup, you shouldn’t see some faces again,” Sehwag said to Cricbuzz.

Some senior players whose performances are not up to the mark might not play next World Cup: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag further cited the example of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup win. He pointed out that several senior players were not a part of the team in the tournament. The former cricketer feels a similar pattern needs to be adopted by Team India now. He added that team needs to think about the future and analyze the performance of some of the senior players, who were not up to the mark. Sehwag said,

“In 2007 a similar pattern was adopted. Those who were playing from so many years didn’t go there (in South Africa). And young players went and there was no hope from them. When India plays the next T20 World Cup, we would want nobody to have any hopes that this team can win but this will be the team for future. If you think about the future today, then you can prepare the team by then. You have two years to examine and there are some senior players whose performances are not up to the mark and they might not play the next World Cup.”
