“Not A One Way Street”: KKR CEO Drops Hint On Reason Behind Shreyas Iyer Decision

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have faced a tough task in finalizing their six-player retention list ahead of the 2025 IPL mega auction. Rinku Singh, KKR’s top retention pick, was joined by seasoned players Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Varun Chakaravarthy, along with uncapped talents Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh.

Each player brings valuable experience, yet the decision to limit retentions meant releasing notable performers, including last season’s captain Shreyas Iyer. KKR CEO Venky Mysore shared the complexities behind these choices, emphasizing the balance between keeping long-standing players and addressing auction strategy.

Transparency in Retention Discussions

Mysore highlighted KKR’s commitment to open communication throughout the retention process. The team not only discussed plans with the retained players but also communicated openly with those they had to release.

He noted that while many players expressed a desire to stay, most understood the circumstances requiring KKR to make difficult choices. Mysore also stressed that retention is a “mutual decision,” underscoring that a player’s interest in other opportunities might influence final choices. KKR’s approach aimed to ensure that players felt respected in their career decisions, even if that meant parting ways.

Auction Strategy and Team Dynamics

With INR 51 crore in the auction budget, Mysore reflected on the unique challenges of this season’s auction dynamics. While KKR’s limited retentions leave them with a considerable budget, they are without the Right-To-Match (RTM) card, which could make team completion more complex.

He acknowledged that each team would face its own auction strategy, given differing financial positions and squad needs. Mysore also credited the KKR support staff for their collaborative input, with experienced personnel like DJ, Chandrakant Pandit, and Bharathi Arun playing vital roles. Despite the challenges, Mysore expressed optimism, trusting that KKR’s extensive planning would lead to a well-rounded squad for the upcoming season.
