Ottis Gibson Joins KKR As Assistant Coach

Former West Indies fast bowler Ottis Gibson has been appointed as the Assistant Coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2025. The 55-year-old joins an experienced coaching unit led by head coach Chandrakant Pandit, with Dwayne Bravo as the team mentor, Bharat Arun as the bowling coach, and Carl Crowe handling spin bowling. Gibson’s addition is expected to strengthen KKR’s coaching staff, bringing in his vast international experience and expertise in fast bowling.

Gibson’s Impressive Coaching Journey

After a four-year playing career with the West Indies, Gibson built a remarkable coaching resume. He has served as England’s bowling coach in two different spells and was also the head coach of the West Indies from 2010 to 2014, guiding them to their first T20 World Cup victory in 2012. Later, he took charge of South Africa’s national team from 2017 to 2019.

Beyond international cricket, Gibson has worked with Bangladesh and the Yorkshire County team, in addition to coaching multiple T20 franchises worldwide. His extensive experience in various coaching roles makes him a valuable addition to KKR’s support staff.

Changes in KKR’s Leadership and Squad

The defending IPL champions, KKR, will feature a revamped coaching setup following the departure of mentor Gautam Gambhir, who has taken over as the head coach of the Indian men’s national team. Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate have also joined Gambhir in the national setup, leading to further changes in KKR’s backroom staff.

Additionally, KKR will have a new on-field leadership structure, with Ajinkya Rahane named as captain and Venkatesh Iyer serving as his deputy. The team is set to begin their title defense at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22.

With a refreshed coaching setup and a new leadership group, KKR is gearing up for an exciting IPL 2025 season. The inclusion of Ottis Gibson adds significant depth to their backroom staff, bringing valuable international experience that could enhance the team’s performance.

While the departure of key figures like Gautam Gambhir marks a transition phase, KKR remains focused on defending their title. As they prepare to kick off their campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, all eyes will be on how the new coaching and captaincy duo shapes the team’s fortunes in the upcoming season.
