Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali has retired from ODI cricket with immediate effect

Pakistani batsman Azhar Ali has been one of their finest batsmen in the longest format of the game. Though he is being trolled for his lethargic runout, his grit and solidity cannot be discounted. In fact, he holds the record for the only triple century in a day-night game. However, he has now called his day in the ODI format of the game.

The 33-year old has announced that he has decided to step out from the ODI formats to prolong his international career in tests. He represented the side in 53 ODI”S scoring 1845 runs. He also led the team for some period of time but results weren”t in his favour. His outing at ICC Champions trophy remains as one of his cherishing moments as he registered three half-centuries in vital games.

On his retirement note, Azhar said “I haven”t taken this decision suddenly, I have been thinking about it. It”s the right time to focus on Tests. There have been terrific players in one-dayers in the Pakistan set-up. I want to concentrate on Tests with the same fitness and energy that I have been. I didn”t decide to retire after any hard feelings, it”s my personal decision. I want to focus on Tests with full energy and improve my career record there. I don”t have any regrets because I always gave all my efforts.”

He also made a special mention of how Sarfaraz has been leading the side successfully in all three formats of the game. Pakistan recently whitewashed Australia in the three-match T20 series and started the series on a winning note against New Zealand.

He last represented in green during the tour of New Zealand earlier this year. He was never considered as a part of the T20I squad as his focus was always on building the innings steadily.

After his press conference at Lahore, PCB chairman Ehsan Mani lauded Ali for his splendid efforts. He said ” He captained in a time of transition for the national team and did well both as a leader and batsman. Azhar remains an integral part of Pakistan”s Test team. I am confident that he will continue to serve the team with distinction.”
