Pakistan Survive Massive Scare Against Netherlands in T20 World Cup Opener

Pakistan

Pakistan

In a dramatic beginning to their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, Pakistan narrowly avoided what could have been a stunning upset against the Netherlands in their opening match at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club. Put in pursuit of a modest target of 148 runs, Pakistan quickly found themselves on the back foot after losing seven wickets with 29 runs still needed from the final 12 deliveries — a situation that had fans and pundits alike fearing a major upset.

Despite the tense run-chase, Pakistan’s fortunes were completely turned around by an astonishing lower-order batting performance. Faheem Ashraf emerged as the unlikely hero, crafting an unbeaten cameo of 29 runs from just 11 balls that steered his side to an improbable three-wicket victory, with the decisive boundary coming off the third ball of the last over.

His intervention was so crucial that, according to one of the social media reactions shared in the original report, “Pakistan was all ready to boycott this entire world cup had Rana Faheem not show up !!” — highlighting just how close Pakistan came to defeat.

Struggles Throughout the Chase

The middle and top order struggled badly as the chase unfolded, failing to build the momentum needed for a comfortable finish. Key players like Saim Ayub, Salman Agha, and even experienced captain Babar Azam were unable to make lasting contributions with the bat, and Pakistan slipped perilously to 114/7 at one stage, putting the team in a position where victory seemed unlikely.

Earlier, the Netherlands had posted a competitive total thanks to spirited batting from their squad. Scott Edwards (37) and Bas de Leede (30) looked to guide their side toward a stronger total before a sharp collapse triggered by Pakistan’s spinners saw them all-out for 147 in 19.5 overs.

Mixed Reactions and Memes Flood Social Media

While Pakistan did secure two points from the match, fans didn’t hold back in their reactions online. The roller-coaster nature of the victory sparked a frenzy of memes and tweets mocking the inconsistency and obvious struggles of the team. One fan joked about the close escape, while others shared humorous takes and clips, underscoring the disappointment among supporters who had expected a much smoother win.

Overall, what should have been a routine opening win turned into a nail-biter, with Pakistan’s late-innings heroics rescuing them from what might have been a major tournament shock.
