Pakistan’s Early Elimination Sparks Backlash

Pakistan’s premature exit from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has ignited significant criticism, not just towards the players but also against Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The tournament, hosted by Pakistan after a 29-year gap, turned into a massive disappointment as the team was eliminated within just five days.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts have expressed their frustration, blaming poor leadership and team performance for the debacle. The criticism has now extended to the PCB leadership, with demands for accountability growing louder.

Political Pressure on Mohsin Naqvi

Omar Ayub, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has openly called for Mohsin Naqvi’s removal. Speaking to the media, Ayub held Naqvi responsible for Pakistan’s repeated failures in international cricket and urged the PCB management to take action.

Pakistan’s performance in ICC tournaments has been dismal in recent years, with the team failing to progress past the group stages on multiple occasions. Their latest elimination followed consecutive losses to New Zealand and India. With hopes of a semifinal qualification resting on Bangladesh defeating New Zealand, Pakistan’s fate was sealed when the Kiwis secured a five-wicket victory over the Tigers, confirming their place in the next stage alongside India.

A Pattern of Poor Performances

Pakistan’s struggles in ICC tournaments have become a recurring issue. In the 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States, the team was knocked out in the group stage after successive defeats to the United States and India. Similarly, in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India, Pakistan won only four out of nine matches, finishing in fifth place with eight points and failing to qualify for the knockout rounds.

As Pakistan prepares to play their last group-stage match against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy, it has been reduced to a mere formality, as both teams are already out of the competition. With mounting pressure from political leaders and cricket fans alike, the PCB may soon face tough decisions regarding its leadership and the future direction of Pakistan cricket.
