Australia will head into their three-match ODI series against India without their regular captain Pat Cummins, who continues to recover from a lumbar bone stress injury. The Australian selectors have opted to rest the star pacer to ensure he is fully fit for the upcoming Ashes series, prioritising long-term workload management.
In Cummins’ absence, Mitchell Marsh has been handed the responsibility to captain the 15-member squad. The team management believes Marsh’s leadership experience and recent form make him a natural choice to lead a relatively balanced unit.
The pace attack, despite Cummins’ absence, remains formidable. Senior fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will spearhead the bowling department, while Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis have been included to provide additional pace options. The selectors hope this blend of experience and youth will offer the team the right mix of aggression and variety against a strong Indian batting line-up.
Renshaw’s Return After Three Years
The series will also mark the return of Matthew Renshaw to Australia’s ODI setup, a comeback that comes after more than three years. The 29-year-old, who has yet to make his ODI debut, last featured in the limited-overs squad in 2022.
His inclusion is based on strong domestic performances for Queensland, where he scored 350 runs at an average of 50 last season. Recent notable innings, including scores of 80, 106, and 62 against Sri Lanka A, have strengthened his case for selection.
Selectors view Renshaw’s inclusion as part of a broader strategy to build squad depth ahead of future ICC tournaments. His versatility as a top-order batter and ability to adapt to subcontinental conditions could prove vital against India’s spin-heavy attack.
Squad Adjustments and Indian Challenge
There are a few other notable changes to the Australian squad. Alex Carey will miss the opening ODI to participate in a Sheffield Shield fixture, allowing the reserve wicketkeeper. Meanwhile, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell continues his rehabilitation following wrist surgery and will miss the T20 matches as well.
The series promises to be a crucial contest as Shubman Gill, who has replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain, leads a new-look Indian side. For Australia, this tour serves as an important preparation phase for the next ICC cycle, testing new combinations and evaluating player form in challenging subcontinental conditions.
