The announcement of Pakistan’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 created a storm among fans and cricket experts alike, as two of the country’s most celebrated players—Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan—were left out.
Both cricketers have been pivotal figures for Pakistan in recent years, and their exclusion sparked speculation about possible rifts or external pressures behind the decision. Many supporters voiced disappointment and confusion on social media, demanding explanations for why two seasoned batters were ignored ahead of a major regional tournament.
Mohsin Naqvi Denies Interference in Selections
Responding to the controversy, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi broke his silence, making it clear that he had absolutely no role in the squad selection process. Naqvi stressed that all responsibility lay with the selection committee and the advisory panel, who, according to him, carried out a series of detailed discussions before finalizing the list. “I don’t have even one percent role in this,” Naqvi remarked, underlining that his job is not to interfere but to support the system in place. He further explained that he has intentionally distanced himself from influencing cricketing matters to ensure decisions are made on merit rather than administrative preferences.
Naqvi also highlighted that the selection process involved extensive consultation among experts, and any conclusions drawn were based on performance, form, and team balance. By reiterating his neutrality, he sought to defuse rumors that the PCB’s top office had engineered the exclusion of Babar and Rizwan.
Merit-Based Approach Moving Forward
The PCB chief reiterated his commitment to a merit-driven system, stating that he fully backs the decisions of selectors as long as they are taken in the best interests of Pakistan cricket. Naqvi expressed confidence that the players chosen will perform well in the Asia Cup, stressing that the board’s primary objective is to build a strong, competitive team for upcoming international events.
He further noted that Pakistan cricket has often been affected by unnecessary speculation and internal politics, and this was precisely why he preferred to maintain a hands-off approach in cricketing decisions. By leaving selections entirely to the committee, Naqvi believes accountability and transparency are better ensured.
The debate around Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s absence continues, but with the PCB chief making his position clear, attention now shifts to how the squad performs in the Asia Cup and whether the selectors’ gamble pays off on the field.
