Pakistan Cricket Board Chief and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has found himself in the spotlight once again after the Asia Cup final in Dubai. Naqvi faced criticism for walking off with the trophy when the Indian team declined to accept it from his hands. Following the backlash, Naqvi took to the microblogging platform X, where his account is withheld in India, to hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulatory message for the Indian team.
In his post, Naqvi stated, “If war was your measure of pride, history already records your humiliating defeats at Pakistan’s hands. No cricket match can rewrite that truth. Dragging war into sport only exposes desperation and disgraces the very spirit of the game.” This came after PM Modi had praised the victory saying, “Operation Sindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same – India wins! Congrats to our cricketers.”
Historical and Sporting Context
Naqvi’s remarks have been criticized for lacking historical accuracy. India’s dominance over Pakistan in wars is a well-documented fact, with the 1971 conflict resulting in the surrender of Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi to the Indian Army. Similarly, during the Kargil conflict, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif admitted that Pakistan had violated the Lahore Declaration.
The reference to Operation Sindoor also highlights India’s decisive military operations against terror sites and misadventures by Pakistan, where air bases such as Nur Khan were left devastated. On the cricketing field, India continued this trend of dominance, defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the Asia Cup 2025 final and lifting the trophy in front of a jubilant crowd.
Post-Match Drama and Presentation Issues
Even after the thrilling game, off-field controversies dominated headlines. The post-match presentation was delayed by 90 minutes, and when it eventually took place, Indian players avoided any interaction with Mohsin Naqvi. The crowd at the venue booed Naqvi and the Pakistan team during the ceremony. Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma received their awards from other dignitaries, while Salman collected the runners-up cheque from Naqvi. Notably, Naqvi refrained from applauding the Indian cricketers.
Presenter Simon Doull revealed, “I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.”
Later, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that India had refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi. As a result, Naqvi and his entourage left with the trophy and medals, while India posed with an imaginary cup amid fireworks, symbolizing another painful defeat for Pakistan on the global stage.
