“People Who Are Worried About Abhishek’s Form, I Worry For Them” – Captain Suryakumar Yadav Backs Abhishek Sharma’s Attacking Play

Both teams entered the Super Eights with flawless records, setting up a thrilling encounter between India and South Africa in Ahmedabad. The match is a repeat of the T20 World Cup final from two years ago, where India had emerged victorious. This time too, expectations are high, but India’s journey has not been entirely smooth. While South Africa under Aiden Markram have looked balanced and confident in all departments, India have faced questions over their batting consistency.

Opener Abhishek Sharma, despite being the world’s number one ranked T20 batter, has endured a lean patch with three successive ducks. Addressing concerns, skipper Suryakumar Yadav stood firmly behind his teammate. With a smile, he said, “People who are worried about Abhishek’s form, I worry for them,” adding that once the left-hander finds rhythm, opposition teams will face the consequences. He further remarked, “I think about those teams against whom he is going to fire as he has not been able to score till now. When he gets the runs then you know how it is.”

Team Spirit And Tactical Flexibility

Suryakumar Yadav emphasised the importance of unity and collective responsibility in a team sport like cricket. He made it clear that Abhishek’s natural attacking style remains vital to India’s strategy. “It is a team sport, it happens. Team requires him to play with his identity, so if he fires it’s okay otherwise we are there to cover for him. Last year he covered for us, now we will do it for him.”

Abhishek has provided explosive starts since his debut in July 2024, and the team believes it is only a matter of time before he regains form. At the start of the tournament, massive totals were expected, especially with India playing at home and nearly breaching the 300-run mark in predictions. However, reality has been different, with Ireland’s 235 against Oman being the highest total so far. India’s best score has been 209 in a commanding victory over Namibia.

Spin Battle And Strategic Edge

Discussing India’s approach, Suryakumar admitted that while aggressive batting is part of their template, adaptability remains crucial. “We are trying to explode from the start because everyone knows their T20 template, but we don’t want to become a team that’s always blasting away,” he explained. He also highlighted the need for stability if early wickets fall, saying, “There could arise a situation where two-three wickets fall early and we have to be a smart team to bat well between 12-15 overs and we have enough firepower that if the base is strong then we can smash 60-70 runs in last five overs.”

India’s spin attack, led by Varun Chakravarthy with nine wickets in four matches, has been impressive. Yet Suryakumar refused to declare India favourites, stating, “The (Indian) spinners have done well against almost all oppositions, (but) I can’t say we will have an edge. It’s a new game and we start from zero. But definitely some good plans. On the given day, plans and execution should be coming together, if that comes together we will definitely have an edge.”
