Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha has backed Mayank Agarwal to open alongside Rohit Sharma in the third Test in Sydney. In the process, he has ruled Shubman Gill to be the one who should be dropped for the next Test. Rohit Sharma meanwhile, has made a comeback to the Indian team and also has been selected as the vice-captain for the last two tests. It is Gill, however, who is a better batsman on current form. 

Speaking to Sports Today, Pragyan Ojha has revealed the reason why he wants Mayank to play the third Test. He believes that the right process has to be followed in terms of selection which is why the management should give the 27-year old another chance.

Pragyan Ojha Picks Mayank Over Gill For Sydney Test

“For me, it is more about the process that the team follows. If a team has to succeed and achieve their goals in the long run, they have to follow a process. Today, Mohammed Siraj has done really well. When Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami come in, neither of them will be rested because that is the process,” Ojha told Sports Today.

He further said that due to this process of backing players he wants Manaynk Agarwal to be picked over Shubman Gill. He further said that youngster is the future of the team and a good prospect for the country as well. 

“I know Shubman Gill has done a brilliant job, he showcased his talent the way he batted. He is a future prospect for us, no doubt about it. But I believe in the process. Mayank Agarwal has been doing well for you. He is your regular opener. So, Rohit should open with Mayank,” he added.

Shubman Gill scored 45 and 35* in the two innings of his debut Test as he provided good starts to the Indian tea. Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal has had scores of 17, 9, 0 and 5 in the four innings of the two Tests.
