The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on May 17 with a much-anticipated clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This match marks the end of a nine-day hiatus caused by political tensions between India and Pakistan, which even led to a drone attack in areas like Pathankot and Jammu.
A subsequent ceasefire allowed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to announce the resumption of the tournament, along with a revised schedule for the remaining 17 fixtures.
However, the Bengaluru game now faces a fresh obstacle—the weather. According to AccuWeather, there’s a 25% chance of rain in the morning, increasing to 70% in the afternoon and 80% by evening, with full cloud cover expected later in the day. While the stadium’s drainage system is one of the world’s best, a downpour could still lead to delays or cancellations.
RCB and KKR, High-Stakes Encounter
RCB currently sits at the second position on the points table with eight wins and three losses from 11 matches. In contrast, KKR finds itself in sixth place, having secured five victories in 12 games. This makes the upcoming match crucial for both teams—RCB aims to consolidate its place in the playoffs, while KKR will be desperate to stay in contention.
RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat expressed optimism about his team’s preparation despite the abrupt break. “The boys came back refreshed and energized. The break, although unexpected, gave many of them time to reconnect with family,” Bobat shared at the pre-match press conference.
Extended Break Brings Challenges for Teams
While the pause gave players a brief rest, it also brought logistical complications. Mo Bobat highlighted the uncertainty it created, especially with international players. “Once the break happened, we had to communicate quickly with overseas players and their national boards. Most were eager to return,” he said.
Nonetheless, some disruptions are inevitable—RCB will lose Jacob Bethel and Lungi Ngidi after a few matches due to national commitments. Bobat emphasized that although the season’s extension posed challenges, the team’s focus remains on finishing strong. As both squads gear up for this pivotal match, the looming threat of rain could become the ultimate game-changer.
