Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar has been handed a ₹12 lakh fine for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on April 7. This marked RCB’s first over-rate offense of the season, placing Patidar alongside Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Riyan Parag — all captains previously penalised for the same reason this year.
Despite the fine, Patidar and RCB stole the spotlight with a thrilling win over MI, ending their Wankhede losing streak. It was their first victory at the venue since 2015, and it came on the back of a dominant batting performance. RCB piled up an imposing total of 221/5, thanks to explosive half-centuries from Virat Kohli and skipper Patidar.
Though MI put up a strong fight in their chase, they ultimately fell short by 12 runs. Patidar’s blistering 64 off just 32 balls earned him the Player of the Match award, helping RCB bounce back after their previous loss to Gujarat Titans. With this win, RCB moved up to third on the points table with three victories from four games, while MI languish in eighth place with just one win in five outings.
“This one’s for the bowlers”- Rajat Patidar
Rajat Patidar modestly remarked that the Player of the Match award rightfully belonged to RCB’s bowling unit following their victory over Mumbai Indians in Mumbai. On a batting-friendly pitch, RCB impressively stuck with just five bowlers to take on MI’s formidable batting order. Though they faced a few challenges, four of the five bowlers picked up wickets.
Notably, the only bowler who didn’t strike, Suyash Sharma, delivered a highly economical spell, conceding just 32 runs in his four overs. Reflecting on the match and the accolade during the post-match presentation, Patidar said (as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo):
“It was a really amazing match. It was very hard. The way the bowlers have shown their courage, it was amazing to watch. This award goes to the bowling unit. It is not easy to stop any team, especially at this ground, and the way they have done it, was incredible. The way the fast bowlers executed their plans was amazing. The way KP (Krunal Pandya) bowled that last over, it was not easy.”
