India’s T20I series against England has been a rollercoaster ride, with young talents stepping up and making their mark. One such performer is Ravi Bishnoi, whose spell in the fourth T20I played a crucial role in India’s 15-run victory. While Bishnoi may not have won the Player of the Match award, his impact was undeniable. However, he revealed Suryakumar Yadav’s advice regarding powerplay bowling.
Ravi Bishnoi’s Performance in the 4th T20I
The fourth T20I, played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, saw India defending their total effectively. England, needing 182 to win, fell short at 166 in 19.4 overs, thanks in large part to Bishnoi’s three-wicket haul.
Bishnoi bowled four overs, conceding 33 runs while picking up three crucial wickets—Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler, and Jofra Archer. His ability to break partnerships and disrupt England’s chase was a game-changer.
India’s Series Victory
With this victory, India clinched the series 3-1, making the final match in Mumbai a mere formality. Bishnoi’s contributions throughout the series have reaffirmed his position as a key bowler in India’s T20 setup. The 23-year-old has shown remarkable consistency and adaptability, making him a reliable option for India, especially in the powerplay and middle overs.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Strategy for Spinners
Bishnoi revealed that Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav advised him, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy to always be prepared for powerplay bowling. Unlike conventional strategies that rely on fast bowlers in the first six overs, India has been using spinners to apply pressure early.
Bishnoi said, “Surya bhai (Suryakumar Yadav) told me that I should always be ready. Axar (Patel), Varun (Chakravarthy), and I—all three of us have bowled in the powerplay, and we must be prepared as any of us can be called upon.”
According to Bishnoi, he and his fellow spinners were always on alert, knowing that any of them could be called upon to bowl in the powerplay at any time.
“When I was handed the ball today, I knew that Ben Duckett struggles to play straight and prefers shots square of the wicket. So, I cut off both his square-of-the-wicket options and bowled deliveries that forced him to play the straight drive more often,” Bishnoi said.
Bishnoi’s Key Wickets in the Match
Bishnoi planned Duckett’s dismissal meticulously. Knowing that Duckett preferred square-of-the-wicket shots, Bishnoi bowled a tight line, forcing him to play straighter, eventually leading to his downfall.
Bishnoi admitted that Buttler is one of the toughest batters to bowl to, given his experience in the IPL and exceptional ability to handle spin. Bishnoi acknowledged Buttler’s brilliance against spin, emphasizing how his IPL experience has helped him adapt to different conditions.
“In my opinion, Jos Buttler is an exceptional player against spin. He has been playing here for a long time and has also competed in the IPL. When a player like him has spent so much time here, he naturally develops a deeper understanding of how to tackle spin. He is one of the toughest batters to bowl to at home,” Bishnoi added.
