Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin shared his thoughts on Dewald Brevis fetching a huge price at the SA20 2025 auction. The Pretoria Capitals secured Brevis for R16.5 million, making him the most expensive player in the league’s history.
Ashwin highlighted the dramatic turnaround in the young South African talent’s journey—from going unsold at last year’s IPL 2025 mega auction to dominating headlines in the SA20 2025 auction. Earlier, Brevis had joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as a replacement player later in the season.
The former India all-rounder also joked that Brevis celebrated his CSK call-up like the warrior ‘Bahubali.’
“I was watching the auction. Two players went for a lot of money. Brevis went for 16.5 million rands. The highest player in SA20. See how a person’s life changes. Nothing happened. Last year he was unsold in the IPL. CSK then took him in the middle. Of course, the player has a quality. But look at the perception that’s following. After playing for CSK, he celebrated like Bahubali,” he said on his YouTube channel. (7:50)
Dewald Brevis shone in IPL 2025, scoring 225 runs in six matches at an average of 37.5 and a strike rate of 180, including two fifties.
“It is all about time. When the time is not right, if you are sincere and hard working, when the tide changes, you will get double. He came in as a replacement player and is now the highest-paid player,” Ravichandran Ashwin added.
Dewald Brevis Shines With Consistent Performances In Australia T20Is
Building on his impressive IPL 2025 performances, Dewald Brevis further boosted his reputation with a strong showing in South Africa’s recent T20I series against Australia. Coming just before the SA20 2025 auction, the timing worked in his favor. Brevis finished as the Proteas’ top scorer, amassing 180 runs in three matches at an average of 90 and a strike rate of 204.54.
The right-hander registered a century and a half-century during the series. At just 22, he has made a promising start to his T20I career, scoring 318 runs in 10 matches at an average of 39.75 with a strike rate of 191.56. Overall, Brevis has featured in 103 T20 matches for various franchises, accumulating 2,491 runs, including two centuries and 11 fifties.
