Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set a clear objective for Pakistan’s cricket team: not only to win the ICC Champions Trophy but also to secure a victory against arch-rivals India in their crucial match on February 23 in Dubai.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Sharif emphasized that while Pakistan has a strong team with recent commendable performances, the ultimate challenge is defeating India in a high-stakes encounter. Aware of the nation’s passion for cricket, he assured that the entire country stands in full support of the team.
Historic Rivalry and Added Tensions
The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is one of the most intense in the sport’s history, with India often holding the upper hand in ICC events since the 1990s. Pakistan’s last triumph over India in an ICC event occurred in 2021 during the T20 World Cup in Dubai. However, this upcoming match carries additional weight due to India’s decision not to send its team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, a reflection of the strained relations between the two cricket boards.
Pakistan, as the defending champions, aims to retain the title, having last won the tournament in 2017 in England. With political tensions influencing the game, the February 23 clash is expected to be a high-intensity affair.
Gaddafi Stadium’s Grand Renovation
Sharif also expressed excitement about hosting a major ICC event in Pakistan after nearly three decades, highlighting the significance of this milestone for the country’s cricketing community. The newly upgraded Gaddafi Stadium, which underwent a transformation in just 117 days, now symbolizes Pakistan’s deep-rooted love for the sport. The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of key dignitaries, including politicians, PCB officials, PSL franchise owners, and former PCB chairmen Zaka Ashraf and Najam Sethi.
The event featured performances by renowned artists such as Ali Zafar, Arif Lohar, and Aima Baig, followed by an impressive fireworks display, a drum show, and a light show. Sharif reaffirmed his confidence in the national team’s ability to make the country proud in the upcoming tournament, urging the players to give their best performance.
