Review: 2nd ODI, New Zealand vs India, Auckland

Indian team needed a win in the second game of the series in order to give themselves a shot of winning the series against New Zealand after clean sweeping the hosts in the shortest format of the game.

Indian Captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field at Eden Park. India made two changes as Mohammed Shami was replaced by Navdeep Saini and Yuzvebdra Chahal replaced Kuldeep Yadav who was taken to the cleaners in the first ODI.

New Zealand made two changes as Mark Chapman replaced Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi was replaced by debutant Kyle Jamieson who is the tallest Kiwi to play the game.

Kiwi Openers Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls started off well as the openers put up a partnership of 93 before Nicholls fell prey to the leg spin of Yuzvendra Chahal. The Indian bowlers then put regular pressure on the kiwi batsmen as spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja took wickets and controlled the flow of runs which saw the Kiwis fall to 187 for 7 .

Partnership between Ross Taylor and debutant Kyle Jameison saw the hosts go past 270 in 50 overs. Setting India a target of 274 in 50 overs.

Indian openers Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal came out to bat inorder to chase the target given by the Kiwi batsmen. India were off to the worst start as the openers and captain Virat Kohli as India were reduced to 57 for 3 with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

Rahul departed soon and was then followed by Kedar Jadhav. Shreyas Iyer scored yet another fifty but got out after playing a wreckless shot.

Ravindra Jadeja then tried building a partnership with the tailenders as Shardul Thakur scored 18 runs before getting out and then stitched a brilliant partnership with Navdeep Saini who scored a career best of 45 before getting bowled to debutant Jameison.

India were hence bundled out 22 runs sort of the target, courtesy brilliant bowling by Tim Southee, Hamish Benett and Jimmy Neesham.
