Ricky Ponting’s tenure as Delhi Capitals (DC) coach from 2018 to 2024 came to an end as the franchise decided to part ways with him. Ponting has since joined Punjab Kings as a mentor for the IPL 2025 season. During his stint, Ponting, alongside Sourav Ganguly, was entrusted with guiding DC to their maiden IPL title.
Despite reaching the final in 2020, the elusive title remained out of reach. Mohammad Kaif, who served as part of the DC coaching staff, suggested that Ponting’s shortcomings in key decisions led the team management to seek a fresh start.
Kaif highlighted Ponting’s mixed record, stating, “Ponting would admit he could have done better with the resources at hand.” He pointed to the 2020 season, where players like Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Shimron Hetmyer struggled to find places in the lineup due to an abundance of talent. Kaif also credited Ganguly for pivotal decisions, such as trading Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Ponting was initially opposed to the move, considering Dhawan’s career to be on the decline. However, Ganguly’s insistence and belief in Dhawan’s abilities proved instrumental as the batter delivered a stellar performance, helping DC reach the 2020 final.
Ponting’s Missed Opportunities
Kaif further highlighted Ponting’s reluctance to back certain Indian players, which occasionally hindered the team’s progress. He credited Ganguly and co-owner Parth Jindal for securing key additions, such as Ashwin, which strengthened the squad.
Reflecting on Ponting’s tenure, Kaif remarked, “The franchise likely felt that Ponting’s game plans had become outdated.” He compared Ponting’s stature to legends like Sachin Tendulkar but noted that even greats must adapt to changing dynamics.
Post-IPL 2024, DC’s management decided it was time to move forward, marking the end of Ponting’s association with the team. While acknowledging Ponting’s contributions, Kaif emphasized that the lack of an IPL title over seven years ultimately sealed his fate.
Ponting’s Early Challenges at Punjab Kings
As Ponting transitions to his role at Punjab Kings, Kaif raised concerns about his initial decisions. Ponting’s approach of retaining only a few players, such as letting go of Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and Liam Livingstone, drew criticism. Kaif compared this to successful franchises like Mumbai Indians, who maintain a core team despite setbacks.
“Ponting followed the same strategy as previous Punjab coaches, prioritizing a larger auction purse over player retention. It’s a gamble that doesn’t always pay off,” Kaif asserted.
Kaif’s insights underscore the complexities of leading IPL franchises and the fine balance between strategy, player retention, and adaptability required to achieve success.
