Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has achieved a remarkable feat in Test cricket, eclipsing the legendary MS Dhoni in an elite batting record. On the fourth day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Pant reached a milestone that places him in a league of his own. The left-hander became the first Asian wicketkeeper to score over 2,000 Test runs in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia — collectively known as the SENA countries. This achievement is particularly significant, as scoring runs consistently in these conditions is a tough challenge for most subcontinent players.
Consistent Performer in Tough Conditions
Pant’s latest performance included a counter-attacking knock of 65 runs from just 58 balls in India’s second innings. His innings featured eight boundaries and three sixes, reflecting his trademark aggressive style. Though he had scored only 25 in the first innings, Pant made a big impact in the second. With this, his tally in SENA countries has reached 2,023 runs from 28 matches, averaging 41.28. His overseas record now includes six centuries and six half-centuries in 52 innings, with his highest being an unbeaten 159.
By reaching this milestone, Pant overtook MS Dhoni to become the leading Asian wicketkeeper in terms of Test runs scored in SENA countries — a record that further cements his growing stature in world cricket. His ability to bat fearlessly under pressure has made him a key asset for India, particularly in overseas conditions where most players tend to struggle.
Stellar Form in the Current England Series
Pant has been in red-hot form during the ongoing five-Test series against England. In just four innings so far, he has amassed 342 runs at an astonishing average of 85.00 and an impressive strike rate of 81.81. He has already hit two centuries and one half-century in the series, with his highest score being 134. His performance has not only helped India in crucial moments but also shown his evolution into a mature cricketer capable of delivering in high-pressure matches.
Pant’s current form and historic achievement highlight his growing influence in Indian cricket and show that he is well on his way to becoming one of the finest wicketkeeper-batters in Test history.
