BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced that Rohit Sharma will lead the side for the upcoming T20I World Cup to be played in the West Indies and the United States of America starting from 1st June onwards. Rohit Sharma led India to the finals of the ICC World Cup 2023. During that tournament, Men in Blue won 10 matches in succession before losing to Australia in a one-sided final played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 19th November 2023.

“The Rohit Sharma announcement, I don’t think was a surprise because I certainly believe that we need that stability, especially at the top. Rohit is someone who has done exceptionally well as India’s captain,” said Kumble.

Rohit Sharma looked in great touch during the 2023 World Cup providing explosive starts putting pressure on bowlers with his aggressive approach making life tough for the bowlers. Under his captaincy, the Indian team won all 9 league matches and looked impressive in the semi-finals against New Zealand played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

After 2 ducks in the first two matches against Afghanistan, he came up with a superb ton that helped India recover from a tough situation at 22 for 4. Rohit showed his class in a super-over that yielded a famous win and whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0. He looked out of sorts being run out in the first T20I match at Mohali. Rohit tried to play a big shot and was dismissed without opening his account.

Rohit’s last shot at the ICC title

Rohit Sharma would be looking to play his hearts during the T20 World Cup 2024. Indian team has been clubbed with Pakistan, Ireland, the United States of America, and Canada in the league stage. The top two teams in each group would qualify for the Super Eight stage.

Under his captaincy, the Indian team would be hoping to lift the T20 World Cup in 2024. Rohit Sharma played a key role with cameos in the first edition of the World Cup played in 2007 in South Africa. Indian team has not won any ICC title since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
