Rohit Paudel

Rohit Paudel

Rohit Paudel, hailing from Lumbini Province, etched his name in history during the last ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by becoming the youngest captain in the tournament’s history at just 21 years and 276 days. Rohit is the fourth individual to lead Nepal at the international level, following Paras Khadka, Gyanendra Malla, and Sandeep Lamichhane. At only 22 years of age, he has captained Nepal in 81 international matches, leading the team to victory in 42 of those encounters.

Rohit’s leadership skills are complemented by his prowess with the bat. He is Nepal’s highest run-scorer in ODIs, having amassed 1,753 runs from 64 innings. In T20Is, he stands as the second-highest run-scorer for Nepal, with 1,310 runs from 65 innings. Over time, he has also developed into a handy bowler, contributing with the ball for the national side.

A Cricketing Journey Ignited in 2014

Nepal’s first-ever appearance at the Twenty20 World Cup in 2014 in Bangladesh not only created history for the country but also inspired thousands of Nepali children to take the sport seriously. Rohit was one of those children. At the time, he was still in his early teens when he saw Paras Khadka take a spectacular catch against Afghanistan’s Nawroj Mangal.

The catch, often compared to Kapil Dev’s famous 1983 World Cup catch, left a lasting impression on the young Rohit, who was watching from almost a thousand miles away in Nepal. It was a moment that shaped his future and motivated him to pursue cricket passionately.

Rohit soon made his way through local tournaments and into age-group teams, impressing everyone with his leadership and skills. He excelled while captaining Nepal’s U-19 team, though he faced disappointment when they narrowly lost to UAE by one run in 2019, missing out on a spot in the U-19 World Cup.

Despite this setback, Rohit’s determination remained unshaken, and he continued to lead Nepal in major tournaments, including their debut in the Asia Cup, where they faced cricketing giants like India and Pakistan, and the World Cup.

Family’s Strong Support

Rohit’s success on the field is complemented by the strong support of his family, particularly his mother, who plays an important role in his cricketing journey. Not only does she manage the household, but she also keeps a detailed record of every run her son scores. Whenever Rohit takes the field for Nepal, his mother diligently records his performance

Success in Nepal Premier League

Rohit’s talent also shone in domestic T20 leagues. He was selected as a marquee player by his home team, Lumbini Lions, for the inaugural season of the Nepal Premier League. During the season, he was the highest run-scorer in the league stage, amassing 279 runs in seven matches, including two fifties.

Additionally, he picked up eight wickets at an impressive economy rate of 5.63. Despite his individual brilliance, his team finished at the bottom of the table with just one win, but Rohit’s performance with both bat and ball left a lasting impression on everyone.
