Rohit Sharma Joins 45-Minute Match Simulation In Mumbai’s Ranji Practice: Reports

Struggling with his batting form, Team India’s Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma participated in a 45-minute practice session with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday morning (January 14). He batted on the center wicket in a match simulation setting.

Rohit had a tough time with the bat and as captain during India’s recent Test tour of Australia. After missing the first Test in Perth due to personal reasons, he played in the next three, managing just 31 runs, with a best of 10. The 37-year-old then withdrew from the playing XI for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney.

According to a report in The Times of India, Rohit practiced alongside Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur at Wankhede Stadium. After the session, he attended a promotional event. A source mentioned details about his practice session to TOI.

“He batted for almost 45 minutes on the center wicket in a match simulation environment. He started with throwdowns, followed by some batting in match simulation, during which he faced Mumbai’s fast bowlers and spinners.”

The source, however, mentioned that it is unclear whether the Indian captain will play in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Jammu & Kashmir, scheduled to begin on January 23.

“He has still not conveyed to the Mumbai Cricket Association whether he will play in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir on Jan 23, as he’s still double-minded about playing the Ranji match. That’s a red-ball game, and the Champions Trophy in February, where he’s likely to lead India, will be a white-ball, limited overs event,” a source added.

Rohit Sharma’s 2024 Test Cricket Campaign Falls Short

Despite leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup last year, Rohit Sharma struggled with form in Test cricket throughout 2024. In 14 Test matches (26 innings), he accumulated 619 runs at a disappointing average of 24.76, including two centuries and two fifties.

He had a strong showing in the five-match home series against England in the first half of the year, scoring two centuries. However, he could only manage a top score of 23 across four innings against Bangladesh at home. During the home series against New Zealand, where India suffered a 3-0 defeat, Rohit could only muster a single half-century.
