Rohit Sharma Likely To Bow Out After ENG vs IND 2026 3rd ODI: Report

The BCCI has reportedly informed Rohit Sharma that he is no longer part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup following a prolonged lean patch with the bat. The pressure on the veteran opener reportedly intensified after his disappointing knock of 26 off 47 balls in the second ODI against England at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19, could potentially be Rohit’s last international match. The 39-year-old had already retired from T20Is after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026 final, while his most recent Test appearance came during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“The Indian selection committee is learnt to have spoken to Sharma alongside coach Gautam Gambhir last week and have laid down their plans going forward. The selection committee wants to give a chance to youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been waiting in the wings, and it’s clear that the committee is not looking at Sharma in the role for the 2027 50-over World Cup,” the report states.

“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” a source in the Indian board told the Indian Express.

Rohit Sharma has endured an inconsistent run in ODI cricket despite receiving ample opportunities to regain form. After returning from a lengthy break following India’s 2025 Champions Trophy triumph, the former captain impressed with a few useful knocks in the ODI series against Australia and South Africa after relinquishing the captaincy.

However, his returns have dipped significantly in 2026, with just one half-century in eight innings. In contrast, his likely successor Yashasvi Jaiswal has strengthened his case by smashing two centuries in his last three ODI innings.

Rohit Sharma Unhappy With Reported BCCI Decision Ahead of ODI World Cup 2027

The veteran batter’s reported exit may not be on the best of terms, with reports suggesting he was unhappy with the BCCI’s decision to look beyond him following the ODI series against England.

“It is learnt Sharma spoke to a few BCCI officials too on the sidelines of the England series, and the opener wasn’t happy with the decision,” the report adds.

It remains to be seen how Rohit Sharma’s future unfolds, as the third ODI could potentially be the final international match of his career.
