Rohit Sharma, India’s cricket captain, has provided a glimmer of hope for fans eagerly awaiting Mohammed Shami’s return to the Test squad. After India’s recent loss to Australia in the second Test in Adelaide, Sharma emphasized that the “door is very much open” for Shami to rejoin the team, albeit with a strong caution about his fitness.
Shami’s Fitness Concerns
The recent ten-wicket defeat in Adelaide highlighted some glaring weaknesses in India’s bowling attack. With the team struggling to maintain consistency, the absence of a seasoned bowler like Shami has been felt deeply.
Shami’s return, however, is not straightforward. During his stint in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he experienced swelling in his knee, raising red flags about his readiness to endure the rigors of Test cricket.
Rohit said, “We are just monitoring him because while playing Syed Mushtaq Ali, he got some swelling in his knee, which hampers his preparation to come and play a Test match. We want to be very careful, we don’t want to bring him here, he pulls up sore or something happens”
Rohit Sharma’s Emphasis on Caution
Rohit Sharma’s remarks underline a cautious approach, reflecting the team’s commitment to ensuring Shami’s long-term health over a hasty return.
Rohit added, “We want to be more than 100% sure with him because it has been a long time. We don’t want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. There are some professionals monitoring, we will take a call based on what those guys feel. They are the ones watching him every game, how he pulls up after the game, after bowling four overs, standing for 20 overs. But the door is open for him to come and play anytime.”
Shami’s Recent Performances
Despite setbacks, Shami made a commendable comeback in domestic cricket, taking seven wickets in a Ranji Trophy match and delivering consistent performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shami has played seven games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking eight wickets in 27.3 overs.
While there’s no official word on when Shami might join the team, his recent outings suggest he’s gearing up for a return. However, much will depend on how his body responds to the demands of competitive cricket.
Why Shami’s Return is Crucial for India
Shami’s presence can tilt the scales in India’s favor. His ability to generate pace and movement offers the team a strategic edge, particularly on Australia’s fast pitches. The loss in Adelaide exposed gaps in India’s bowling arsenal, making Shami’s experience more vital. A team of medical experts is closely monitoring Shami, ensuring that his return is managed with utmost care.
