Rohit Sharma To KKR? Mumbai Indians Drop A Savage Hint That Says It All

As the IPL 2026 auction nears, speculation around player transfers is heating up, with franchises set to reveal their retained players list by November 15. Among the biggest rumours circulating was that Rohit Sharma might leave the Mumbai Indians (MI) to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, the Mumbai franchise swiftly put an end to such talk.

Shortly after Rohit’s close friend and long-time batting associate Abhishek Nayar was announced as KKR’s new head coach, MI addressed the speculation in their trademark witty style. Posting on X, they wrote, “Sun will rise tomorrow again ye toh confirm hai, but at (K)night… mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai (not only tough, but impossible).” The playful use of “(K)night” made it clear that Rohit’s move to KKR was out of the question, signalling the franchise’s intent to retain their skipper.

Abhishek Nayar Takes Over As KKR Head Coach

On Thursday, Kolkata Knight Riders officially confirmed the appointment of Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach, following the exit of Chandrakant Pandit after a three-season stint. Nayar, who has been part of KKR’s setup since 2018, is known to have played a major role in shaping the team’s strategies and mentoring young players.

His influence in the dressing room and his strong involvement in team selection have been widely acknowledged. Nayar’s elevation comes after his recent stint with the Indian national side under Gautam Gambhir, where he served as assistant coach before being replaced by Sitanshu Kotak following India’s Champions Trophy triumph.

A Coach With Deep Roots And Strong Connections

Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, praised Nayar’s impact, saying, “Abhishek has been a vital part of the Knight Riders setup since 2018, shaping our players both on and off the field. His understanding of the game and connection with players have been key to our growth. We’re thrilled to see him take over as Head Coach and lead KKR into its next chapter.”

Nayar’s contributions to KKR extend beyond his official role, as he has worked extensively with the franchise’s academy structure and young players. Over time, his reputation as a personal coach has flourished, having mentored stars like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Dinesh Karthik, alongside nurturing emerging talents such as Angkrish Raghuvanshi. The 43-year-old’s appointment marks a new chapter for KKR while reinforcing his long-standing bond with both the team and Indian cricket.
