India veteran Rohit Sharma has informed the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) of his plans to train at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on June 8 and 9 ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. However, his availability for the series will depend on his recovery from the hamstring injury he picked up during IPL 2026.
The Mumbai Indians opener missed several matches in the middle phase of the IPL season before making his comeback for the final few games. Rohit’s campaign ended on a disappointing note with a duck against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium, while MI failed to qualify for the playoffs after finishing ninth in the standings.
As per the standard procedure, injured centrally contracted players are required to report to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for assessment, rehabilitation, and fitness clearance. However, Rohit is yet to report at the facility.
“Rohit Sharma has informed the PCA that he will train at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on June 8 and 9. The former India captain has even asked for a specific slots. But he is yet to go to the CoE for the fitness test. India’s ODI squad is set to assemble in Mohali on June 8,” a report from the Times of Indiaread.
The three-match ODI series against Afghanistan will get underway on Saturday, June 13, following the conclusion of the one-off Test in Mullanpur. Dharamshala, Lucknow, and Chennai have been selected as venues for the maiden bilateral ODI series between the two teams.
Rohit Sharma Endured A Disappointing Outing In His Last ODI Appearance
Rohit Sharma last played an ODI during India’s home series against New Zealand earlier this year. The veteran opener struggled throughout the series, managing just 61 runs from three matches as India suffered a 1-2 defeat. He averaged 20.33 with a strike rate of 76.25.
Although Rohit enjoyed a fairly solid IPL 2026 season, concerns over his fitness and recent performances have sparked discussions about his future in the Indian setup, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
