England captain Jos Buttler believes that Rohit Sharma’s explosive century in the second ODI at Cuttack is proof that the ‘Bazball’ approach is the correct way to play modern cricket. Rohit played a match-winning knock of 119 off just 90 balls, leading India to a four-wicket victory and sealing the series.
The Indian skipper, who had been struggling for form in recent months, looked like a completely different player as he smashed 12 fours and 7 sixes. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Buttler praised Rohit’s dynamic style and emphasized how it aligns with England’s aggressive philosophy.
“He really showed (that) in this day and age, in the modern sort of way of playing 50-over cricket, it’s very dynamic, very aggressive. He scored at a rate that just confirms really that the way we want to play is the right way that you have to play to try and win games in cricket,” Buttler said. “The way Rohit played showed that the way we want to play our cricket is the way, the correct way to play cricket.”
Rohit’s Return to Form Amid Pressure
Rohit had been under immense pressure to perform, especially after his failure in the first ODI, which led to criticism on social media, with some fans even suggesting he retire. However, his dominant innings in Cuttack silenced the critics, showcasing his ability to handle pressure and deliver when it matters. Buttler acknowledged the scrutiny Rohit faced and suggested that if a player of his caliber could be under pressure, others should not be too hard on themselves.
“It’s probably a nice reminder for all of us that if someone of Rohit’s calibre can be under pressure, we should be a bit easier on ourselves,” Buttler said. “He’s been a great player for such a long period of time and top players generally come up with the goods, and he obviously did that today.”
A Learning Experience for Both Teams
Buttler further noted that players from both teams could learn from Rohit’s innings, as it demonstrated his ability to shift gears and handle different match situations. Rohit’s performance not only helped India secure the series but also reinforced the importance of an aggressive yet adaptable batting approach in ODIs.
“Any time you’re playing against great players and they’re playing an innings like that, I’m sure players on both sides will be watching and learning. He played a brilliant innings and (displayed) how he can go up and down the gears and absorb pressure, put a lot of pressure back on (the opponent),” Buttler added.
India and England will now face off in the final ODI on February 12.
