An old tweet of Rohit on Shubman Gill resurfaced on the social-media platform moments after the big knock, which led the Men in Blue to a rather narrow victory after Michael Bracewell’s threatening 140-run knock, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

A little more than a month after Ishan Kishan scored a double century in ODIs, India now has another to brag about, as Shubman Gill smashed a record 208 in the series opener against New Zealand on Wednesday. Gill became the fifth Indian on the elite list, with only current India captain Rohit Sharma having accomplished the feat three times in his career.

Gill became the youngest player in ODI history on Wednesday, breaking Ishan’s record. The feat was first accomplished by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar before Rohit smashed it with a 156-ball knock against Australia in 2013. It was the first of three such knocks for him, the others coming in 2014 and 2017.

As a result, Rohit understands what it takes to score a double tonne in the 50-over format better than anyone else who has played the game. And, while he must have congratulated him on the knock after the game, there was no better way to sum up Gill’s achievement than Rohit’s old tweet from 2020.

Shubman Gill scored a double hundred

Rohit, on the other hand, had a more elaborate statement on Gill’s knock, which he mentioned to the India star during their BCCI.tv discussion.

“The way you constructed your innings was superb to watch because on the other side we were losing wickets at regular intervals. It is not easy for a set batsman to continue batting in a similar fashion with wickets falling on the other end,” Rohit said to Gill in a video posted by BCCI. “Our next best score is 34 after your 208, and that tells you a lot how well you batted,” he added.
