Indian team captain Rohit Sharma has shown inconsistent performance with the bat in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Despite facing challenges, with the exception of a few standout performances, India comfortably advanced to the Super 8 stage
Rohit started the tournament impressively with a solid half-century against Ireland in the opening match but had to retire hurt after being struck on the arm. His contributions in the last two matches were modest, scoring 13 against Pakistan and three against the USA.
Looking ahead to the Super 8 stage starting in a few days, Rohit aims to focus on leading the team effectively. India will play their Super 8 matches in the West Indies following a successful stint in the USA leg.
Here are Rohit Sharma’s three finest white-ball innings in the West Indies:
#3 79 off 46 vs Australia – T20 World Cup 2010
Rohit Sharma achieved his highest T20 score in the Caribbean Islands during a T20 World Cup match against Australia in 2010 in Barbados. Australia batted first and scored a formidable 184/5 in their 20 overs.
Shane Watson and David Warner provided a strong foundation with a 104-run opening partnership. David Hussey capitalized on this start to significantly bolster the team’s total. Except for Rohit Sharma, Indian batsmen struggled against the Australian bowlers and were dismissed for 135 runs.
While wickets fell at regular intervals, Rohit anchored the innings. He played elegant strokes and finished unbeaten on 79 from 46 balls at a strike rate of 171.73, including four boundaries and six powerful sixes. Despite his efforts, India lost by 49 runs, leading to their elimination from the tournament.
#2 86* vs West Indies – 5-match ODI series, 2011
India entered the third game of the series with a comfortable 2-0 lead. Batting first, the hosts found themselves struggling at 96/7 before Andre Russell played what could be considered his best ODI innings. He struck eight boundaries and five sixes on his way to an unbeaten 92 off 64 balls, propelling his team to 225/8 in 50 overs.
During the chase, India faltered to 92/6 and faced a daunting task. However, Rohit Sharma displayed resilience to keep India in the game. He forged crucial partnerships with Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar, guiding the team to victory with 22 balls remaining.
Rohit Sharma finished not out on 86 from 91 deliveries, featuring five boundaries and two sixes. This also stands as his highest white-ball score in the Caribbean Islands.
#1 64 vs West Indies – 5-match T20I series – 2022
Rohit Sharma shone brightly in the opening match of the five-match T20I series against the West Indies in 2022. Opening the innings, he launched a powerful assault to give his team a rapid start.
India posted a formidable total of 190/6 in their allotted 20 overs, with Rohit leading the charge as the highest run-scorer. The Mumbai-born cricketer compiled 64 runs from 44 deliveries at a strike rate of 145.45, including seven boundaries and two sixes.
This also marks his second-highest T20I score in the West Indies. India eventually triumphed in the match by 68 runs after restricting the home side to 122/8.
