Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been fined and handed one demerit point for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their T20 World Cup 2026 clash against South Africa on Wednesday in Ahmedabad. The spin-bowling all-rounder was found guilty of breaching Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers arguing with umpires.
The incident occurred in the 14th over of Afghanistan’s innings when Nabi confronted the umpires over a wristband worn by Proteas pacer Lungi Ngidi. Nabi, the former captain, asked Ngidi to remove the wristband, citing difficulty in tracking the ball, prompting umpire intervention.
During the exchange, Mohammad Nabi was deemed to have violated Article 2.4, which addresses “Disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an International Match.” As a result, the 41-year-old has been fined 15% of his match fee and received one demerit point for his conduct.
South Africa Triumph Over Afghanistan in Nail-Biting T20 WC 2026 Match
After South Africa posted a challenging total of 188, powered by half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton (61) and Quinton de Kock (58), Afghanistan began their chase shakily. However, a brilliant innings from Rahmanullah Gurbaz kept them in contention, as he scored 84 off just 42 balls.
The match came down to the final over with 13 runs needed, ending in a tie. In the first Super Over, Afghanistan batted first and scored 17, leaving South Africa requiring 18 to win. With seven runs needed off the last delivery, Tristan Stubbs smashed a six over long-off, forcing a second Super Over.
Stubbs struck again, hitting another six, while David Miller added two more, setting a 24-run target. Despite Gurbaz hitting three consecutive sixes off left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, Rashid Khan and the Afghan team fell short.
Afghanistan now face a tough task to reach the Super 8s, as both New Zealand and South Africa have already secured two wins each in Group D.
