David Miller and Klassen broke records in fourth ODI against Aus

South Africa levelled the series at 2-2 with a commanding 164-run victory over Australia in the fourth One-day international match played at SuperSport Park, Centurion on 15 September 2023. After being asked to bat first, Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock gave a steady start putting on 64 runs for the opening wicket.

They lost quick wickets of de Kock and stand-in captain Aiden Markram. After the 2nd drinks break in innings, Rassie Van der Dussen and Klassen upped the ante with big shots before Van der Dussen perished trying to hit another big shot.

David Miller and Klassen came to the crease hammering the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground. It was one of the best hitting by both players that took South Africa to a mammoth total of 416 for 5 in 50 overs. Klassen was eventually dismissed off the last delivery.

The Australian batting provided a flying start but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Travis Head did not bat due to injury. Alex Carey was the last batter to be dismissed for 99 as South Africa bundled out Australia for 252. For his brilliance, Klassen was named the player of the match. The fifth and final ODI match will be played at Johannesburg on 17th September 2023.

Heinrich Klassen’s score of 174 is the second-highest individual score by a batter in One-day international batting at number 5 or lower. The previous best was by Kapil Dev during the 1983 World Cup against Zimbabwe where he scored a record-breaking 175 runs that helped India recover from a tough situation. Klassen posted the highest-ever individual score by a batter coming into bat in the 25th over or later. AB de Villiers scored 162 against West Indies in 2015 while Jos Buttler hammered Netherlands bowlers last year.

The partnership between Heinrich Klassen and David Miller holds the record of the highest partnership in terms of run rate. Both added 222 runs off 94 deliveries while Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler recorded 204 runs in partnership off 124 balls at 10.03 runs per over against WI in 2019.

Klassen and Miller’s 222-run partnership is the first double-century stand in ODIs against Australia for fifth wicket or lower, it is also the highest-ever partnership overall for fifth in 50 over format. Klassen scored the second-fastest 150 in a One-day international by a South African batter. He completed 150 off 77 deliveries while AB de Villers scored 150 off 64 against WI in 2015.

South Africa holds the record for most 400-plus scores going past India’s 6. Adam Zampa equalled the most number of runs conceded in the ODI format. He gave away 113 runs in his 10 overs without any wickets. Mick Lewis gave away 113 runs during the famous game between Australia and South Africa in Johannesburg. Australia scored 434 while South Africa made 438 to register a memorable win.

The duo created the most runs scored in the last 10 overs as they amassed 173 runs to help South Africa post 416 for 5.
