Sunrisers Eastern Cape cricketer Tom Abell showcased remarkable fielding skills in a futile attempt to prevent a six during the SA20 2024 clash against the Durban Super Giants last Saturday. Despite his efforts, the third umpire ruled the ball as a maximum. The incident unfolded in the 18th over of the first innings, bowled by Daniel Worrall.

Jon-Jon Smuts, facing, pulled the ball to deep square leg. Abell, in a valiant effort, caught it with his right hand, but his throwback went in vain as he had touched the rope before making initial contact with the ball. The Durban Super Giants demonstrated a formidable batting performance, with Matthew Breetzke and Quinton de Kock’s opening partnership setting the stage with 58 runs.

Smuts excelled with a top score of 75 off 38 balls, and Nicholas Pooran contributed a blistering 60 off 31 balls, establishing a challenging target of 226 for the SunRisers Eastern Cape.

In response, the Sunrisers faced a daunting task. Openers Adam Rossington and Jordan Hermann fell for single-digit scores. However, Abell and skipper Aiden Markram collaborated for a promising 93-run partnership before Markram’s unfortunate dismissal. Abell continued his solid performance, reaching 65, but his departure marked a turning point.

Tristan Stubbs fought a lone battle with a spirited 55 off 26 balls, yet the lack of support from the remaining batsmen resulted in a 35-run victory for the Super Giants. Noteworthy bowling performances from Smuts, Richard Gleeson, and Dwaine Pretorius, each claiming two wickets, secured the Super Giants’ triumph. With this win, DSG solidified their position at the top of the table, having comfortably won both their games in the tournament.
